August to May
Email Coming
We host a monthly hike from August to May led by a Scout (the "Assistant Hike Leader" for that specific hike) and their Parent Volunteer.
Sign up opens in August.
Scouts completing seven hikes during the Scouting year are eligible to earn a hiking stick or a Medallion at Crossover. They must complete the scheduled hike while carrying their daypack with the Scouting Six Essentials included.
Five must be completed with the Pack. Two may be completed outside of Scouting ("Family Hike") as long as the Scout carries the Cub Scout Six Essentials and the hike meets the minimum requirements. This is on the honor system and the Scout must notify the Hike Leader when a Family Hike completed.
After the Hike, the Scout and Parent Leader will create a custom Hike Loopy that will be given to each Scout (and their siblings) that attended the hike.
Distance - A hike should be 2-4 miles round trip and is fairly easy to moderate.
Location - Trailhead should not be more than 60 minutes from Sandburg Elementary, even less is better.
Scouts must carry a daypack with the Scouting Six Essential inside.
Parent Volunteer, with their Scout, will give a 5-10 minute presentation about a Hike Skill, which might be on: Water Safety, Hike Essentials, Scouting, Fire and Light (At Night Hike), Footwear and Footcare, Snow Safety, Clothing Layering Systems, Ice Safety, Navigation, Wildlife and Plants, Water (Creek Hike), or something the Parent Volunteer is passionate about (talk with the Hike Leader about it).
Lead Scouts in the Outdoor Code and perform "Buddy Checks" and "Water Breaks" as necessary.
Keep it fun - Plan for something unique along the trail (i.e. waterfall, old ruin, scenic overlook, etc..)
Dates - Most hikes are scheduled the 2nd or 3rd weekend each month, can be Saturday or Sunday (some times on Tuesdays), and will be schedule at a time of the Scout Leaders choosing.
